Something for your ears.

I had something I wanted to put here, but I don’t remember what it is anymore. Where’s my head at, anyhow. In any case, here are some brand new old recordings of the rough kind. They’re all MP3s, pardon me for not also posting OGG Vorbis.

Everything: a sort of acoustic balad type thing going on here. Recorded with only one crappy mic in a basement somewhere.

February: the subject matter is sort of ironic and not as topical as it could be, but we’ll let that go seeing how I wrote it last year, not this.

Nothing: insane ramblings. Not sure what I was doing here.

Rattle and Hum: this is what happens when I decide I am a Goo Goo Dolls/Barenaked Ladies hybrid tribute band.

Back in the Day: this is what happens when Jars of Clay inhabits me and I have delusions of Hasseltine.

Enjoy!

God, Can I Thank You

I hung out with my sister today, and whilst doing so, wrote this song. Originally it was going to have violin in it, but hey, violin is not an easy instrument to play.

The song itself is a reflection on the scripture that says, “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” Which I think, in my quest to become a better child of his, is the only way to avoid becoming resentful.

God, Can I Thank You [MP3]
God, Can I Thank You [Ogg]

The lyrics are as follows:

God, can I thank you for the glass between my toes?
Lord, can I thank you for the way these muscles burn as they grow?

God, can I thank you for the way you break these bones?
Oh, how they’re aching like they have ever since you brought me home.

God, can I ask you for something, if I may?
Oh, I don’t deserve it, but I’ll ask you for this favour anyway.

Lord, if you’ve got time, could you catch this thing I throw?
Keep it in your hands; it’s so precious to me, but I think you know.

God, can I thank you for the things you take away?
Oh, I am learning how to live under your scalpel every day.

Why Should the Fire Die?

Here, for your listening pleasure is short song I wrote, something I might possibly develop someday. I blatantly stole the title from Nickel Creek.

Mourn

As it turns out, the latest round of recording has finally produced - gasp - a song. You can click the links below to listen. I’ve uploaded it in MP3 and Ogg Vorbis format. Again, this is a pretty rough cut. Cut me some slack, will ya?

Mourn [MP3]

Mourn [OGG]

Enjoy.

Edit: fixed those links.

Edit 2: on an unrelated note, I think I may have tiny little crush on Riot Becki of the Pipettes. In Britian and in a manufactured indie pop band (when did that start happening?) nevertheless, I fear it will be a short-lived thing. I just can’t get past the polka-dot dresses.

Here’s something for your ears.

I threw a little something together at work today. Don’t worry, it’s no masterpiece. This is basically a really short song that doesn’t have any purpose other than practice for me. It consists of a drum loop I threw together, a Ben Gibbards acoustic guitar intro looped and distorted, several audio samples of famous people saying famous things, some hand drums played by American Indians, and some Mid-east Asian guy crooning something or other.

Horse

This is a song I wrote about five years ago. It’s rather depressing, so consider yourself warned!

Also, the file is quite large. Because the song is quite long.

Waiting

Well, I seem to be in a creative mood today. Here’s a little something more for you to listen to. Again, it’s just a rough cut, so don’t be too harsh on me…

Anyhow, for those of you who are interested, this song took 22 takes, about three hours to write, two hours to record, and two cups of coffee. Also, there are no loops in there, and I haven’t adjusted any of the levels. Basically what came out of my mouth and piano is what’s there. Also, no effects.

If you were wondering, yes, I’m in the market for a new vocal mic. Any advice would be great.

Waiting

Lyrics:

Friday, and I was forced
like a wild wet seed into the ground
with the dampness and the warmth
of the loam fingers wrapped around
my inertia.

Friday, and I was borne
like a wild white seet on brother wind.
In a slipshod summer storm
I am finally born, buried again
in hybernation.

Waiting for something;
waiting for Monday.
Oh, I’ll grow at the corners of the wall.

Friday, and there’s the wall
with the dawning day heaving overhead.
The morning had found me tall
in the shadow of what I never said
at germination.

Waiting for something;
waiting for Monday.
Oh, I’ll grow at the corners of the wall.

Almost above the wall.
Almost above the wall.
Almost above the wall.
Growing at the corner of the wall,
it paralyses.

Waiting for something;
waiting for Monday.
Oh, I’ll grow at the corners of the wall.
Oh, I’ll grow at the corners of the wall.
Oh, I’ll grow at the corners of the wall.

Chorus

Here’s a little something I threw together tonight… it’s a little wierd, but bear with me. I was just fooling around on the piano, and this came out.

Note: I do not sing on this song. So bravely soldier on.

Getaway

I am such a major geek. The other week I recorded this tiny little snippet of an idea I had for a song - which, I might add, is still just an idea for a song - and played in on my piano. So I’m playing it back and I decide to add some vocals, but having no vocals, I just make these up off the top of my head. And they’re… stupid.

Then I think to myself, hey, let’s play with effects a little, shall we? After adding some (laughably bad) guitar to the mix and trying just about everything I could think of in effects, I stettled on just a couple, and this came out. Please note that I moved my voice to the front of the soundstage to hide the guitar, which re-emerges at the end as a sort of screaming something-or-other. I dunno what that is. You decide.

Getaway (it’s really, really short)

Last Train

Well… it’s another installation of “Dan Posts a Song”. Enjoy this; again, it’s a little rough in places, but overall, the sound is a notch up from the last one. At least I think so.
