Pearls

I am digging pearls out of the compost heap
and rolling them around my palm,
hot out of the stove: I am thinking of
stringing them together for
decoration.

You are looking at me oddly
and saying, “No-one wears pearls anymore.”
Coolly. I am thinking you are
stringing me along for
decoration.
