My Favourite Bands

This weekend, someone asked me what my favourite bands are. I didn’t really know what to say, except that I love Radiohead and everything else flows out from there. Today, my curiosity piqued, I began to wonder what, statistically, are my favourite bands?

Last.fm and my scrupulously collected statistics to the rescue. I present for your consideration the top fifteen or so.

1. Philip Glass
2. Band of Horses
3. Sufjan Stevens
4. The Books
5. Boards of Canada
6. Snow Patrol
7. Derek Webb
8. Radiohead
9. Death Cab for Cutie
10. Iron & Wine
11. Modest Mouse
12. Bright Eyes
13. Steve Reich
14. Grandaddy
15. Andrew Bird

That Boards of Canada is on that list surprises even me. I had no idea.

Hmmm…. let’s see. I break down that list this way:

    Never Listened To
    Philip Glass
    Band of Horses
    The Books
    Boards of Canada
    Steve Reich
    Grandaddy
    Andrew Bird

Have Heard a Little, but Don’t Own a CD
    Death Cab for Cutie
    Modest Mouse
    Bright Eyes

    Own at least 1 CD
    Sufjan Stevens
    Snow Patrol
    Derek Webb
    Radiohead
    Iron & Wine

Time to hit the ITMS to listen to samples.

(I know, I know iTunes sucks. Different thread.)

Can I suggest that you especially check out Band of Horses’ release “Everything All the Time”, Philip Glass’s soundtrack to the movie “The Hours”, Andrew Bird’s stellar “The Mysterious Production of Eggs”, Grandaddy’s opus “Sumday”, The Books’ subtle and mysterious “Lost and Safe”, and Steve Reich’s mind-bending “Music for 18 Musicians”.

R.E.M., man. Why isn’t REM on the list…?
I’ve heard of Suf, Modest Mouse, Snow Pat., and Radiohead… Heard of DCFC but I refuse to listen to them because so many people keep fawning over them with so many poetic words….. plus they played a show that benefited Planned Parenthood.

I get to see Modest Mouse when I go to the REM show in June :)

REM isn’t on that list because I do not like nor do I listen to REM. It’s a pretty simple equation actually.
