There are literally thousands of Ubuntu programs available to meet the needs of Ubuntu users. Many of these programs are stored in software archives commonly referred to as repositories. Repositories make it very easy to install new software onto Ubuntu using an Internet connection, while also providing a high level of security, as each program available in the repositories is thoroughly tested and built specifically for each version of Ubuntu.

"Packages that would make my professional life just a little bit easier."
How much is it true?

Good list.

I looked into ERP5 before but it nothing seems current on their website. Is it still an active project? I really like the look of it because of its awesome Python/Zope backend.

Oh, and VMWare Server is still in the repos. Canonical changed the name of the commercial repo to partner, so that may be why it disappeared for you.

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu gutsy partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu gutsy partner

Works for me. They do sometimes lag behind the new releases but it is properly packaged with the kernel modules.
