And Then and Then

Open, like an unspoiled vista, with words
that sweep wide wings and rise on thermals:
this is the language of your world,
the earth inside your head where no
tree has borne the fruit
of good and evil.

Then the abrupt heartbeat
kindles; earthbound, you stutter
to a stop and a gnosis,
skein that have flayed skyward
where nothing but hermetic
cloud roils.

O the sentences O the phrases
but pressure and gravity and squalling tears
choke from you a granite threnody;
I will build you I will carve you
but dull with welling weight
it is slipping from your grasp.

At twilight in the garden you almost
see. Repeating the beginning;
And then And then And then
