Holy privacy violation, Batman!
Apparently AOL researchers decided it would be a good idea to release a month or so of searches done by its users. Although AOL is calling it a screw-up, it’s already out there. Of course the Somethingawful.com goons got their hands on it [warning: strong language - don't click that link if you don't want to see what kind of crap people search for]. And this file is already in the wild: there’s a torrent of the original file and also a SQL file floating around.
So I must ask: what sort of drugs was AOL taking? And what sort of lax security measures must be in place to allow such a leak to take place? And really, is apologising going to make it better, fellas? I doubt it.
Edit: crap, look at this one, filtered to remove irrelevant searches in between. Now that’s one depressing set of search terms:

Oh my. People. Time to shut OFF the internet. But before I go, one last snippet: some enterprising soul has imported the entire log into an SQL database and is letting anyone on the entire internets search the thing. Go nuts before the takedown notices start.

hmm… didn’t Google take a hit for NOT disclosing search result information to the government? Of course this is different… disclosure to the public.. but still, there’s got to be some common principle that underlies both… the government wants to watch us, and the common people are just nosy for its own sake.
August 7th, 2006 at 9:09 pmYes, Google very much went to court over that.
In any case, I trust them with my search terms much more than I would ever trust AOL with… well… anything.
